Panthers use an ancient formula for success

Football Betting Lines

10/16/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Consider the Carolina Panthers' 25-10 victory over the Arizona Cardinals this past Sunday a win for the ages.

With No. 1 quarterback Jake Delhomme out for the season with a damaged right elbow and backup David Carr dealing with an ailing back, the Panthers turned to 43-year-young Vinny Testaverde to lead their offense at a pivotal juncture of the season. And the grizzled old pro proved once again that there's no substitute for experience.

Just days after being granted an opportunity to play for a 21st NFL season, Testaverde thanked his new employers by delivering a remarkably efficient performance under center. He completed 20-of-33 passes for 206 yards and one touchdown without committing a turnover, while also showing there's still something left in that well-worn right arm with a nicely-thrown deep ball that game-breaking wide receiver Steve Smith turned into a go-ahead 65-yard touchdown with 5:40 remaining.

"Part of coaching is putting guys in positions that best utilize their abilities," said Panthers head coach John Fox. "I thought you saw some of Vinny's out there, particularly on that go route to Steve and some of the deeper routes that he threw. We eased into (the offense) and Vinny had his nuggets that he wanted, and I thought he did a tremendous job."

A tremendous job indeed, considering that Testaverde was making his first NFL start in nearly two years and wasn't even on Carolina's roster until four days before Sunday's game. He was signed by the Panthers on Wednesday and initially slated to serve as the understudy to Carr, who was on track to start against the Cardinals before his sore back tightened up on him Friday during the team's long flight to Phoenix.

So Fox put his faith in a guy who's older than three current NFL head coaches, born the same year as four others, and was receiving a crash course in the Carolina offense. As it turned out, his decision really wasn't much of a gamble at all.

"The offense they run here is very similar to what I had in New York when I was there a few years ago, so it was very familiar to me," Testaverde said. "I was just trying to go through my progressions seeing the defense, making sure I saw where I threw the football and not give it away."

At 43 years and 335 days, Testaverde became the oldest quarterback in NFL history to win a game. His scoring strike to Smith, who racked up 136 yards on a season-best 10 catches, extended the durable signal-caller's own league record of consecutive seasons with a touchdown pass to 21 straight years.

The well-traveled quarterback also accomplished those feats against an Arizona team he had a chance to be a part of. When the Cardinals lost starting triggerman Matt Leinart to a season-ending broken collarbone in last week's win in St. Louis, the club quickly contacted Testaverde to fill its need for an experienced backup. He declined the offer, however, because Arizona was too far from his family's New York-area home.

The Cardinals instead brought in ex-49ers and Buccaneers quarterback Tim Rattay, whose debut with his new team didn't go nearly as smoothly as Testaverde's.

PEPPERS, DEFENSE RETURN TO FORM

While Testaverde certainly made a strong contribution to Sunday's win, the greatest individual impact came from Julius Peppers. The All-Pro defensive end atoned for a quiet first five games of the season with a monster outing highlighted by a bone-jarring sack of Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner in the first quarter. The hit not only caused a fumble that the Panthers converted into a John Kasay field goal, but forced Warner out of the game with a sprained left elbow.

Arizona was then forced to put in an unprepared Rattay, who was intercepted three times and completed only 12-of-24 throws. Two of those picks were by free safety Deke Cooper, the first multi-interception game of the journeyman's six-year career.

Carolina forced five Cardinals turnovers on the afternoon and limited Arizona's capable offense to only 257 total yards.

Peppers, meanwhile, was a one-man wrecking crew. He recorded a season-high seven tackles, 1 1/2 sacks and two forced fumbles after being shut out in the quarterback takedown category through the first five weeks. Peppers has amassed double-digit sack totals in four of his first five NFL campaigns.

SEIZING AN OPPORTUNITY

Reserve running back DeAngelo Williams compiled a career-best 121 yards on only 10 carries against the Cardinals, and capped Sunday's scoring with a 13- yard touchdown burst in the final minutes. The talented second-year pro also set a Panthers single-game record with a 75-yard scamper that started the team's final point-producing drive.

The franchise's previous longest rush from scrimmage had been held by Williams' backfield mate, DeShaun Foster, who mustered just 43 yards on 17 attempts on Sunday. Foster had a 71-yard run at Kansas City on September 9, 2004.

Williams' had one 100-yard outing as a rookie last season, a 114-yard effort against St. Louis on November 19.

DOME SWEET DOME

Carolina has now won six consecutive games on the road dating back to last season, all of which have been held indoors. Sunday's contest at the lavish University of Phoenix Stadium was played with the retractable roof closed. The Panthers are 4-0 in away games this year, having previously posted wins at St. Louis' Edward Jones Dome, Atlanta's Georgia Dome and the Superdome in New Orleans.

Conversely, Carolina has lost six in a row when playing outdoors. The Panthers will play the remainder of their regular season games in open-air venues.

TIME TO REST

The Panthers will have an opportune bye week this coming Sunday, giving Fox's troops some needed time to prepare for an October 28 showdown with the defending world champion and currently undefeated Indianapolis Colts.

The Colts will be making their first-ever appearance at Bank of America Stadium. Indianapolis' only previous game as the visitor with the Panthers came during Carolina's inaugural 1995 season, when the team played its games at Clemson Memorial Stadium.

Carolina has won all three previous meetings between the teams, including a 23-20 overtime triumph at Indianapolis in 2003.

The 2009 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds have been released and Denver Broncos' running back Knowshon Moreno has been made the opening favorite.

Bet NFL Sports Lines

Moreno was selected in the first round of April's NFL draft and is expected to carry the rushing load for the Broncos this season. And with Jay Cutler now in Chicago, Moreno might be expected to be Denver's entire offense.

Betting Lines from sports betting lines have made Moreno a 5/2 favorite to win this year's Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. Fellow running back Chris “Beanie” Wells (Arizona Cardinals) is right behind Moreno at 7/2, while Donald Brown (Indianapolis Colts) and receiver Michael Crabtree (San Francisco 49ers) are 5/1 to win. Quarterbacks Mark Sanchez (New York Jets) and Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions) are 7/1 and 8/1, respectively.

A couple of players who present some value are Josh Freeman, Shonn Green and Darrius Heyward-Bey.

Freeman needs to beat out Byron Leftwich to become the starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but if he does, he has a lot or raw talent and could use the weapons around him (i.e. Kellen Winslow Jr. and Antonio Bryant) to be very successful in his first season.

Green enters a crowded backfield in New York, but considering both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are unhappy about their contract situations and might holdout, the former Iowa product could become the Jets' primary back.

Everyone was shocked when Al Davis took Heyward-Bey with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, but the kid has a tremendous amount of talent and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell takes the next step this year, the former Maryland product could blossom. Plus, Heyward-Bey will be looking to prove the people wrong who said Oakland should have taken Michael Crabtree with the No. 8 pick.

And if you're looking for a deep sleeper, check out Pat White at 30/1. He enters the Miami Dolphins vaunted “Wild Cat” offense and could be a big time playmaker.
